"American Idol" continued down the path to a probable Lee DeWyze-Crystal Bowersox final round with the Wednesday elimination of Michael "Big Mike" Lynche.
On Tuesday night, the well-liked Lynche sang Michael Jackson's "Will You Be There" from the soundtrack to "Free Willy" as part of the show's "Songs from the Movies" theme week. The judges said they weren't impressed with his safe, predictable version of the song. Lynche's competent but bland performance was actually overshadowed by the joshing that broke out when it emerged that judge Simon Cowell had never heard of "Free Willy."
Lynche also duetted on Tuesday with Casey James on the song "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" from the film "Don Juan DeMarco." It was a slight but charming performance, but not enough to keep Lynche around for one more week.
"It's been unbelievable, man," he told host Ryan Seacrest after he found out he was going home.
"I just sit here right now and think I wasn't even supposed to be here," said Lynche, who was kept in the competition by the "judges' save" in April.
Lynche's most memorable performance was of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work" earlier in the season and it wasn't hard to see why he felt so connected to a song about motherhood -- his wife gave birth to their daughter during the talent competition's Hollywood Week.
Still in the competition are Casey James (and it's hard not to picture him going home next week), Bowersox and Chicago's own DeWyze.
